The Playwright’s Lab Year-round Sundays 3 pm – 5pm During this intensive peer-led workshop on the art of playwriting, participants will write drafts of short, one-act, and full-length plays, have them read by PTC actors and lab members, and ultimately develop their work for submission. Cost: $50 annual fee plus PTC Membership dues of $25.00.PTC Fall Playwrights’ Festival “Women Playwrights: Identity and Transformation” September 17 – 19, 24 – 26 October 3 – 5, 8 – 16, 2004 The Provincetown Theater, 238 Bradford Street Festival Artistic Director: Guy Wolf The PTC Fall Playwrights’ Festival features readings of new full-length and one-act plays, as well as fully staged productions of short plays by Cape Cod and East Coast playwrights. The Playwrights’ Festival includes audience discussions led by professional dramaturges, as well as workshops in directing, acting, and playwriting, taught by nationally known theatre educators. The fall featuring women playwrights and an original comedy by Meryl Cohn October 8—16th at 8PM. The Craft of Dramatic Structure (Playwriting) with Sinan Unel October 21 – December 23, 2004 February 10 – April 14, 2005 Thursdays 5:30PM – 7:30PM (limited to 12) This course emphasizes the use of certain principles to construct compelling drama. It also explores the basis of the three-act structure as it applies to plays of all lengths, character and event structured action. Cost: $225 Sinan Unel is the author of many plays, including Pera Palas, Thalassa My Heart, A Mad Person’s Chronicle of a Miserable Marriage, and The Three of Cups, as well as two screenplays. He has produced plays for the Boston Playwright’s Theatre, The Lark Theatre Company in New York, and the Landestheater in Turbingen, Germany, among others. Awards include The John Gassner Memorial Award, The Panowski New Play Contest (finalist), and the 2001 New Century Writer Award for best screenplay. He’s currently working on a play commissioned by Huntington Theater Company in Boston. Directing Workshops with Charles Karchmer November 6, 7, 20, 21, 2004 Saturday, Sunday, 12-3PM This workshop is designed for the beginning and intermediate director. Students will develop skills needed in directing, including staged readings and fully staged productions. Topics covered include interpreting a text, blocking techniques, and developing a creative relationship with actors, designers, and technicians. Location: TBA Cost: $150 Charles Karchmer is an award-winning director and coach who has been active in New York and regional theatre for over twenty-five years. A graduate of Dartmouth College, he studied at Columbia University with Joseph Papp, and subsequently with Curt Dempster. A founding member of Ensemble Studio Theatre, Mr. Karchmer’s numerous productions have featured actors such as Christine Baranski, Daniel Stern, David Rasche, Stephen Collins, and Carmen de Lavallade. His work has also been seen in New York at Manhattan Punch Line (where his production of Peter Tolan’s Best Half-Foot Forward featured Dan Butler, Robert Stanton and Tim Carhart), Playwrights Horizons (where he directed Wendy Wasserstein’s first New York production), Ark Theatre (including the original Starmites, with Fisher Stevens and Rob Morrow), American Jewish Theatre, The Juilliard School, Young Playwrights Festival, and the Atlantic Theatre Acting School. His production of Love! Valour! Compassion! for the Philadelphia Theatre Company garnered five Barrymore Awards, including Outstanding Direction of a Play, Best Ensemble, and Best Supporting Actor (Edward Hibbert). He has directed actors including Jerry Zaks, John Spencer, Brent Barrett, Rita Gardner, Randy Graff, Betty Henritze, Julia Meade and Arte Johnson in plays and musicals at regional theatres including Actors Theatre of Louisville, Philadelphia Drama Guild, Syracuse Stage, Portland Stage, Pioneer Memorial Theatre, the Birmingham Theatre and Nassau Rep. Scene Study: Analyzing the Text /Building a Character with Judith Partelow March 20—May 1, 2005 Sundays 12 noon– 2:30 pm (limit 12) This dynamic experience focuses on developing the actors’ craft through work on scenes by contemporary playwrights, with an emphasis on character analysis, vocal technique, dialects, improvisation, and movement. Location: TBA Cost: $180 Judith Partelow is a member of Actors' Equity Association, Screen Actors’ Guild, and The American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA). She directed the screenplay readings of The Passion of Alice, by Jaime Grant, and Robin Haueter’s screenplay, Vi’s Leg for the Provincetown Film Festival. Other recent work includes a one woman show she created on Opal Whiteley; two Paula Vogel play readings, The Long Christmas Ride Home, and for the PRT, The Oldest Profession. Judith has acted extensively in PTC Playwrights’ Festivals, and directed the short plays of Wendy Levine, Candace Perry and Lynda Sturner. She has directed for other companies on Cape Cod including the musicals Working (for Susan Grilli’s Theatreworks in Provincetown Town Hall), The Snow Queen (HJT), Beauty and the Beast, The Fisherman and His Wife, Home for Christmas (APA), Evening in Spoon River, and was a founder of the Night of New Works in Orleans, and Cape Cod Poets and Actors Workshops (CCPAWS). She has appeared in productions with the Academy of Performing Arts in Orleans, Cape Rep, The Chatham Drama Guild, W.H.A.T.; and in Provincetown as a company member of Provincetown Rep's Queer Studies. She has worked on stage with Bob Newhart, Julie Harris, Apollo Dukakis (Painting Churches for the Provincetown Playhouse), and Natalie Ross (of All My Children). Films include Mystic River, The Firm, Ghostbusters, Raise the Titanic, The Kennedys of Massachusetts, and How Henry Miller Changed My Life (filmed in Provincetown fall of 2000).
